So when the Irish, when Germans, when Italians were coming, and they didn’t speak the language and they didn’t know the culture, the idea was they will assimilate into Americanhood; they will become American, which in the American tradition has meant white American.
But that melting pot never included people of color. Blacks, Chinese, Puerto Ricans, etcetera, could not melt into the pot. They could be used as wood to produce the fire for the pot, but they could not be used as material to be melted into the pot.
I watched this for at least 4 different classes. The first time was in my social justice class senior year of high school. I’ve watched it in my sociology, Asian American studies, and anthropology classes too.
“Woodstock is the great American orgy. This is who the Democratic Party has become. They have become the party of Woodstock. The prey upon our most basic primal lusts, and that’s sex. And the whole abortion culture, it’s not about life. It’s about sexual freedom. That’s what it’s about. Homosexuality. It’s about sexual freedom.
All of the things are about sexual freedom, and they hate to be called on them. They try to somehow or other tie this to the Founding Father’s vision of liberty, which is bizarre. It’s ridiculous.”—
Republican Rick Santorum doesn’t just want to fight the “culture wars” of the 21st century, he wants to go back and re-fight the 20th century. You know it just kills him that he wasn’t around to protest against Griswold v. Connecticut or Loving v. Virginia and all the other times in the 20th century when progress was made. He is a raving lunatic.
“I want to know why people find it so unsettling when they encounter a boy who wants to dress up like a princess or a girl who wants to cut her hair short and wear baggy pants. I want to understand why people are so horrified by trans* people and gender-queerdos. I want people to explain why they react so negatively to anyone whose gender expression fails to align with the expected markers. […] How about instead of focusing on whether or not people are good at being “men” or being “women,” we care more about whether they are good at being a decent human being? Can you imagine what this world would look like if people took half of the effort they put into caring whether they and others are performing gender according to the arbitrary standards of our culture, and instead put that into being ethical, compassionate, and caring?”—For the last time – yes, you can be feminine and play sports! « Fit and Feminist (via sexisnottheenemy)
