Be You: Op-ed: The Importance of Marriage Equality to Trans Community

radicalqueery:

Some transgender people are frustrated by the significant resources that our organizations devote to marriage equality efforts, but there’s reason to believe it will make a difference.

Glee introduces trans* character (SPOILERS)

gaywrites:

Last night’s episode of Glee introduced The Glee Project’s Alex Newell as Wade/Unique, the first transgender character to appear on the show.

Wade approaches the group asking to perform onstage wearing a dress as the “alter ego” of Unique. Though it’s not made perfectly clear whether Wade/Unique is trans* or in drag, this summary from PopCrush seems to provide a pretty sound argument that Wade is trans*:

But even Kurt, it seems, has a lot to learn. When Kurt advises Wade not to become Unique on stage, it is evident that he doesn’t understand what trans people go through. “You identify as a man,” Wade tells him, and when Unique takes the stage, it’s obvious that this is who Wade is. Unique is the true identity, and Wade is the fiction. Unique, of course, brings the house down with her moves.

What did you think of Wade/Unique?

Saudi Arabian schools move to ban "gays and tomboys"

gaywrites:

The government in Saudi Arabia has put forth efforts to ban gays and masculine-appearing women from schools to fight homosexuality, according to reports from Saudi Arabia. Details from the news source:

The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, the most feared law enforcement authority in the oil-rich country, has been asked to enforce the new orders, Sharq Arabic language daily said.

“Instructions have been issued to all public schools and universities to ban the entry of gays and tom boys and to intensify their efforts to fight this phenomenon, which has been promoted by some websites,” it said.

The paper did not make clear who issued those instructions but said gay and tom boy students can go back to schools and universities if they prove they have been corrected and have stopped such practices.

I don’t even know where to start on how wrong this is. How can you possibly justify keeping kids out of school for something like sexuality, let alone appearance? We need someone to step in, and we need it now. This is inexcusable.

Majority:
“Proposition 8 serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California, and to officially reclassify their relationships and families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples.
…
‘Marriage’ is the name that society gives to the relationship that matters most between two adults. A rose by any other name may smell as sweet, but to the couple desiring to enter into a committed lifelong relationship, a marriage by the name of ‘registered domestic partnership’ does not” [emphasis mine].

From the dissent:

The two reasons that Smith believes are enough to keep marriage segregated? 1. “a responsible procreation theory” and 2. “an optimal parenting theory.”

O’Reilly: More ‘bigotry against pro-life people than gay people’
Fox News host Bill O’Reilly declared Monday evening that hatred for pro-life advocates is stronger in America than for gay people.
In a discussion about social issues, regular O’Reilly guest Bernie Goldberg condemned “the bigotry on the right” for attacking Ellen DeGeneres’ and the LGBT community.
“Reasonable people may disagree on gay marriage, that’s fine,” Goldberg said. “But to call on someone’s dismissal to be fired, to lose her job, because she’s gay, is bigotry. And I don’t care how many people listening to us right now don’t like that, it’s bigotry.”
But O’Reilly felt later on that another group received far more animosity throughout the nation.
“The bigotry against pro-life people is I think way more than the bigotry against gay people,” he said. “Particularly in the media because the media supports gay people in this country.”
WATCH: Video from Fox News, which was broadcast on February 6, 2012.

And radical gay people shoot bigots to the applause of other gays. Wait…that’s radical pro-lifers, isn’t it? My bad.
It’s hard to feel bad. No one stands outside of pro-life churches with graphic images from the Bosnian genocide screaming about murder.
